Hosanna

Hosanna was written by Brooke Fraser (now Brooke Ligertwood), a New Zealand-born singer-songwriter who was part of Hillsong UNITED at the time.Fraser has shared that the chorus came together unexpectedly while she was playing piano, attributing the creative breakthrough to the Holy Spirit. It was released on March 17, 2007 as part of All of the Above, Hillsong UNITED’s first studio-recorded album. The album was a major success, reaching #1 on Billboard’s Top Christian and Gospel Albums chart. Since then, it quickly became a staple in contemporary worship services worldwide, sung regularly in thousands of churches across denominations.

The title comes from a Hebrew expression meaning “save, we pray,” which by Jesus’ time had become an exclamation of praise and adoration. The song recontextualizes this cry as a vision of Christ’s second coming, balancing themes of divine power, mercy, and personal redemption.
